Meet at the boathouse at 9am and we hope to be back
at 5pm. The expected cost will be between £5 and £10 to cover the cost
of fuel (please see the message in the socials chat for more details about how
trip finances work).
This is a fantastic opportunity to give whitewater kayaking
a go or brush up on some skills if you are already a veteran!
This trip is strictly only open to those who:
-
Can confidently paddle on flat water (i.e. straight
line and turning)
-
Are comfortable wearing a spray deck AND has
performed a capsize drill that was witnessed by a current DUCC leader.
If you have not yet completed a capsize test, please
send me (Jake) a message and then sign up to this week ‘Wednesday Warriors’
and we can do it there. Do NOT sign up to this trip until you have completed
one.
If you cannot paddle confidently on flat water, it will not
be appropriate for you to go on this trip, however there will be plenty of
opportunity to hone your skills by coming along to ‘Wednesday Warriors’.
We will provide wetsuits, cags, and kayaking equipment but you
must bring:
- Warm layers* (thermals and fleeces- NOT jeans)
- Shoes you don’t mind getting wet and muddy (old trainers
are ideal- NO CROCS OR SLIDERS)
- Packed lunch
- Water bottle
- Change of clothes (including hat gloves etc)
- Towel to change with
- Waterproof jacket
- Any personal medication you may need, e.g. inhaler (please
let an exec member know if this is the case)
Also please make sure you have eaten a good breakfast before
you arrive at the boat house on Saturday (think ‘Noah Coombe’…)
Any questions or concerns please do message me, or any other
exec members!
Hope to see you there!
Friday pool sessions are back!
All welcome. These sessions will focus on boat skills, getting comfortable with a spray deck and teaching you how to roll. After a few weeks we will focus more on canoe polo skills.
Meet @ boathouse at 7pm sharp. We will load up the cars and drive you to Darlington. You'll need swimming stuff (e.g. t shirt and shorts) and a water bottle/towel. Bring some snacks if you like - biscuits are provided afterwards. We get back to Durham about 10:45.
If you haven't been before, you'll have to do a short swim test. This involves swimming two lengths of a 25m pool (total 50m) and treading water for 1 minute. No specific stroke or great technique required.
If you unsign from a pool session within 24hrs and can't find someone to replace you, you will still be charged. If you do unsign, put a message on the group offering your place to people. Price for members is £6. Non-member price is £9.
Morning fitness on the river. This event is for paddlers who are comfortable in a polo boat. If you haven't been in one before but are an experienced paddler, please message Charlie (captain) before you sign up to make sure this is suitable.
This will be a pyramid sprint session. If the river is too high we will use the ergs instead.
Faff and swimming are not permitted. Off the water by 8 ish to give you time to get to 9ams.
If you wake up and decide you aren't going to make it please send a message to tell us.
Bring a water bottle, prepare for pain
No theme for the social this week as our mighty social sec is away. However, fear not, as we will have a relaxed evening in spoons instead. We will be there from around 20:00. It would be great to see as many faces as possible!
***NOTE: The river levels have the potential to get a lil *spicy* at this time of year so the session may be called off last minute. Please keep an eye on the group chat.***
THE WEDNESDAY WARRIORS CONTINUE AT MC 14:15 - 15:45
The usual relaxed Wednesday session! Open to all with beginners especially welcome, this is simply a really chill couple of hours on the river. If you want to get into kayaking or simply have a fun afternoon session on the river this is the session for you!
Please bring a fleece to wear on the water, spare shoes, plenty of spare clothes, and a towel. It is best to avoid jeans on the water as these shrink when wet.
Any questions please ask in the socials chat, message the club instagram, or message Devon (Vice Captain).

Chill paddle from the DUCC boathouse down to the Boat Club pub by Elvet bridge. All welcome.
Highly unlikely you will get wet, but it's sensible to bring a change of clothes just in case. Also make sure you bring some form of payment for the pub (and ID if you plan to drink).
The club does not pressure anyone to drink if they do not want to.
Sign up! See you there!
Come along to DUCCs roped up social! Meeting at St Mary’s college bar at 20:00, we will don our BAs and throw lines and head into town. With a few extra games to play along the way, the night won’t want to be missed!

Welcome to Durham University Canoe Club!
Come join us for a chill paddle on the River Wear! This
session is suitable for complete beginners so don't worry if you've never
paddled before.
We provide all of the kayaking kit and the session is
completely free. All you'll need is a spare change of clothes (just in case you
get wet), some trainers to wear on the water, and a towel. Hopefully it will be
nice and warm, but consider bringing an extra layer too. Where possible, try to
come to your session in what you intend to wear on the water.
Please come to the boathouse 15 minutes early so we can get
you kitted up and choose a boat. We meet at the boathouse behind Maiden Castle
next to the river (see the about tab for more info on where to find us).
There's also a handy pinned post on our instagram telling you where we are.
If you have any questions, drop us a message on
Instagram/Facebook.
We can't wait to see you on the water!
