Tyne Tour Weekend

Friday 31st October 2025 17:00 at Hexham

Our first residential trip this  year is Tyne Tour! A fun weekend packed full of whitewater carnage and Scottish jigs with universities from across the country, held on the North Tyne in Hexham!

This is a super chilled out introduction to residential trips with DUCC and is open to anyone who can paddle confidently on flat water, and completed a deck test! (i.e the same requirements for going on an intro to whitewater)

Here's the rough itinery:

Friday: drive up in evening, spoons for dinner, bed.

Saturday: DUCC dawn chorus wakeup (iykyk). Paddle north Tyne, off the water mid afternoon greeted with a cup of homemade soup. Watch fireworks followed by a Ceilidh with the other unis (by far the highlight of the trip!!) before consuming adult beverages in spoons and heading back to the tents (or succumbing to phoenix’s temptations…)

Sunday: Fight hangovers and find a more interesting paddle for the day (water dependent but likely high force - low force) before returning home to brace for our Monday 9ams.

Food: The two evening meals are normally had at the MacDonalds in Hexham, or at the Wetherspoons, but is chosen and paid for by yourselves on the day. Breakfast and lunch will be a selection of lidl pastries and cereal, and self-made sandwiches respectively, which is supplied by yours truly. I will try and keep costs for this as low as possible, and then the final amount you owe is added to your website debt at the end of the trip.

Accomodation: We camp on Hexham green for the duration of the weekend. Tents and sleeping bags can be provided, but are in limited supply so if you have your own kit please do use it! If you have not camped before that’s completely fine, just please message an exec member and we can ensure you have appropriate equipment.

Cost: The ticket for the event costs £35, and with fuel and food on top, it should be roughly £50, which is really good value for a weekend away!!

I think that is all there is to tell you, more details will be released once signups close.

Hope to see you there!!

We will be pumpkin carving!

Please sign up if you are coming.

This will be held at my house (see WhatsApp group). If people don't want to lug a pumpkin across Durham, message me by Friday and I'll order some. Also TD have a thing about socials at people's houses so this will be strictly sober.

Sunday Canoe Polo

Intro To White water 3 (The Last one!!)

Saturday 25th October 2025 09:00 at Barnard Castle

This is the last intro to white water we will be running this term. This serves as a prerequisite to all of our other whitewater trips (excluding Tyne tour) so if you want to do whitewater this term and haven’t been on an intro already then this is your last chance!!!

Meet at the boathouse at 9am and we hope to be back at 5pm. The expected cost will be between £5 and £10 to cover the cost of fuel (please see the message in the socials chat for more details about how trip finances work).

This is a fantastic opportunity to give whitewater kayaking a go or brush up on some skills if you are already a veteran!

This trip is strictly only open to those who:

-          Can confidently paddle on flat water (i.e. straight line and turning)

-          Are comfortable wearing a spray deck AND has performed a capsize drill that was witnessed by a current DUCC leader.

If you have not yet completed a capsize test, please send me (Jake) a message and then sign up to this week's ‘Wednesday Warriors’ OR the Friday pool session* and we can do it there. Do NOT sign up to this trip until you have completed one.
*please also message me directly if you plan to do your deck test at the pool session, since signups will close before the pool session ends...

If you cannot paddle confidently on flat water, it will not be appropriate for you to go on this trip, however there will be plenty of opportunity to hone your skills by coming along to ‘Wednesday Warriors’.

We will provide wetsuits, cags, and kayaking equipment but you must bring:

- Warm layers* (thermals and fleeces- NOT jeans)

- Shoes you don’t mind getting wet and muddy (old trainers are ideal- NO CROCS OR SLIDERS)

- Packed lunch

- Water bottle

- Change of clothes (including hat gloves etc)

- Towel to change with

- Waterproof jacket

- Any personal medication you may need, e.g. inhaler (please let an exec member know if this is the case)

Also please make sure you have eaten a good breakfast before you arrive at the boat house on Saturday (think ‘Noah Coombe’…)

Any questions or concerns please do message me, or any other exec members!

Hope to see you there!

Friday Pool Session

Friday 24th October 2025 19:00 at DUCC Boathouse

Friday pool sessions are back!

All welcome. These sessions will focus on boat skills, getting comfortable with a spray deck and teaching you how to roll. After a few weeks we will focus more on canoe polo skills.

Meet @ boathouse at 7pm sharp. We will load up the cars and drive you to Darlington. You'll need swimming stuff (e.g. t shirt and shorts) and a water bottle/towel. Bring some snacks if you like - biscuits are provided afterwards. We get back to Durham about 10:45.

If you haven't been before, you'll have to do a short swim test. This involves swimming two lengths of a 25m pool (total 50m) and treading water for 1 minute. No specific stroke or great technique required.

If you unsign from a pool session within 24hrs and can't find someone to replace you, you will still be charged. If you do unsign, put a message on the group offering your place to people. Price for members is £6. Non-member price is £9.
